Artist Statement
For me, life can only be described as a perpetual waking dream. I recognize it in the surrealist painters of the 20th century as well as in the religious intensity depicted by the artists of the European Renaissance period. It is visual story telling that tries to make sense of who we are, why we are here, and what happens to us when we are gone.
What is spirituality? It is what human beings have created to process their anxieties, because reality is intense, joyous, painful, and ultimately terrifying.
What is Surrealism? It is what artists must do to process their anxieties, because for them reality doesn’t exist.
In my art, I explore the absurdity of humanity. Imagining exaggerated features like huge ears and symbolic animal skulls, I invite viewers to contemplate our collective folly. These surreal elements serve as a whimsical reflection, highlighting our societal and environmental transgressions. The visual narrative, balancing humor and gravity, encourages introspection and the contemplation of these consequences, hopefully altering just a bit, the way we perceive, and move within, our fragile world.
